2025 | AMPULLA VESSEL. FIRST IMAGINED IN BAMBOO, THEN SURRENDERED AND REBORN WHEN THE MATERIAL SAID NO. THE FORM INSISTED ON EXISTING, SO THE MATTER CHANGED. BEAUTY ARRIVED.
CREATED FOR WINE, IT REFUSES CONFINEMENT. IT WANTS TO LIVE ON A TABLE, NOT BEHIND GLASS. TO POUR PORTUGUESE PORT ONE EVENING,
AND SWEDISH SAFT FROM BOB THE NEXT.
FAITH IS NOT ALWAYS A CATHEDRAL. SOMETIMES IT IS A TUESDAY KITCHEN, A QUIET TABLE, AND SOMEONE REMEMBERED IN SILENCE.
USE IT. FILL IT. REMEMBER.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Q: HOW DID THIS OBJECT ADVENTURE BEGIND?
DAVID: “We have a friend who works with and trades in bamboo, and for a long time we wanted to make something in that material. In hindsight, we probably started wrong – we fell in love with the shape of bamboo, not bamboo itself. It was chaos. Everything leaked. The liquid wouldn’t flow the way we wanted. It felt like trying to mould patience with your bare hands.”
CARLOS: In the end, we gave up. Or… we gave up the material, not the form. It was too true to abandon. Sometimes you have to let an idea change its body, not die. So this became our first little nod to bamboo. The rest will have to wait. For now, bamboo lives only in our bed linen.”
Q: WHAT DOES THE OBJECT MEAN TO YOU?
DAVID: “It’s Communion and Tuesday in the same body. God and kitchen counter at once. Sometimes wine. Sometimes juice. It’s beautiful when something can be ‘holy’ even when it’s ordinary.”
Q: WHY DOES THIS OBJECT FEEL SO PERSONAL?
DAVID: “Because it doesn’t try to shine. It wants to be used. It wants to stand in the middle of life, not in a glass case. I’m tired of objects that just pose. I’ve never liked decorations without function, but I’ve always loved beautiful things.”
Q: HOW DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO USE IT?
CARLOS: “Pour. Whether it’s wine or cordial. Sit down. Breathe. Remember someone you love. Or just yourself – that’s enough.
DAVID: Dream version? To see it on a communion table in a church where Carlos and I are welcome too.”
Q: FINALLY, WHAT COMES NEXT?
DAVID: “I’d love to complement the carafe with a silver bread bag inspired by Portugal and, drum roll… the liturgical act of Communion.”
