THE FORM DRAWS FROM THE IDEA OF ASCETICISM AS A WAY OF LIVING WITH LESS, WHERE SIMPLICITY IS NOT DECORATIVE BUT ESSENTIAL.
CARVED FROM MARBLE, THE STOOL APPEARS RAW AND UNCOMPROMISING. ITS MATERIALITY IS DIRECT, ALMOST CONFRONTATIONAL, ASKING TO BE SEEN AND FELT RATHER THAN INTERPRETED.
ARTIST STATEMENT
This stool engages with asceticism not as an ideal of perfection, but as a practice of limitation. Historically, the ascetic life has been associated with the rejection of possessions and embellishment, sometimes even of the body itself. That reduction, and the tension it creates, is central to the work.
The form consists of three distinct blocks, all carved from a single piece of marble and then reassembled. Despite their shared origin and precise craftsmanship, the parts never fully merge into a seamless whole. The gaps and misalignments are intentional. They serve as a reminder that even when everything is measured, controlled, and stripped back, perfection remains out of reach.
The stool reflects a broader human condition. Many of us strive for clarity, discipline, and an ideal form of life, yet we remain inherently imperfect. Our objects, like ourselves, carry that limitation. Even when created with care, precision, and restraint, they resist becoming flawless.
In this way, the Ascetic Stool does not present asceticism as a solution, but as a question. What remains when everything unnecessary is removed, and why does that still fall short of perfection?
