ARTIST STATEMENT
We was drawn to the idea of the bēma as a place where something is said, witnessed, or acknowledged. A raised platform changes how we behave. It slows us down. It makes presence feel intentional.
When working on Bema, we wanted to create an object that carries that shift without becoming theatrical. The elevation is subtle, but it alters the way the body sits and how people relate to one another around it. Comfort matters, but not as indulgence. What interested me more was attentiveness.
Every decision was made with restraint. I wanted the materials and proportions to speak quietly, without decoration or excess. The authority of the piece is not loud. It comes from balance, weight, and stillness.
Placed at the center of a room, Bema becomes a shared surface for conversation and pause. It is where moments gather, where stories take shape. For us, it is not just a seat, but a way of giving weight to presence, both physical and human.
