ITS FORM DRAWS FROM THE IMAGE OF THREE FIXED POINTS IN THE NIGHT SKY, A CONSTELLATION HELD IN BALANCE BY DISTANCE AND CONTINUITY. WHAT ONCE EXISTED AS MYTH AND OBSERVATION IS BROUGHT INTO AN EVERYDAY OBJECT.
THE LAMP’S COMPOSITION BALANCES STABILITY AND FRAGILITY, BELIEF AND FUNCTION. THREE ELEMENTS SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER, CREATING A QUIET TENSION BETWEEN LIGHTNESS AND WEIGHT. THE NAME INRI REFERENCES FAITH AND TRUTH, WHILE REMAINING FIRMLY GROUNDED IN USE.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Carlos: As a child growing up in Alentejo, I was fascinated by three fixed points in the night sky. On long journeys home – and they were always long journeys home – they were always there. Three small lights against the dark. Silent, distant, but constant. My mother called them for me; the Three Marys.
Over time, the number three became something I carried with me. Almost as a belief. In the same way others find meaning in astrology or tarot, this image stayed present. Even now, when the sky above me is different, that memory remains unchanged.
The INRI lamp grew out of that image.
I wanted to translate those three points of light into something grounded. To let mythology take material form. Into an object that could exist in everyday life. A lamp.
Its structure balances stability and fragility, belief and function. The three elements hold one another in place, just as those lights once did in the sky.
The name INRI carries a quiet irony. It references faith and truth, yet exists as a functional object, shaped by gravity, material, and use.
INRI is a memory made functional.
