ARTIST STATEMENT
CARLOS: I was born from my mother’s hands. Hands of the Alentejo, strong and patient, the color of earth after rain. My mãe raised me with silence that spoke louder than words, and with work that was prayers. From her, I learned that love is not something we say, but something we do, every single day. My mãe used to speak about great women from our land; like women who lived with courage burning quietly inside them.
She spoke of Amália Rodrigues, the voice of Portugal, who sang pain and hope in the same breath, whose fado could make even silence weep. She spoke of Florbela Espanca, the poet who turned her wounds into words, who dared to feel everything when the world asked women to feel nothing. And she spoke of Catarina Eufémia, the farmworker from Alentejo, mother like herself, who faced a rifle and died, asking only for justice and bread.
And I see now; my mãe carries something of each of them. She has Amálias soul, Florbelas heart, Catarinas courage. In her hands live the stories of women who refused to be silent.
When I look at her, I see the same wide skies of Alentejo: calm, vast, eternal. She is the earth and the bread, the prayer and the song, the promise that the world can be kind.
I was born of you, mãe, born in bloom, born in faith, born of the red earth of Alentejo, and of your boundless love. Love.
