2026 | OBLATION BENCH | THIS WORK TAKES THE FORM OF A BENCH. ITS FORM GUIDES THE BODY FROM SITTING INTO YIELDING. WHEN LYING DOWN, WITH THE CHEST SLIGHTLY ELEVATED AND THE LIMBS RELEASED, THE BODY ENTERS A STATE OF OPENNESS AND SUPPORT, SIMILAR TO THE EUPHORIC REST EXPERIENCED IMMEDIATELY AFTER INTENSE PHYSICAL EXERTION.
THE WORK REFERS TO A RARE MOMENT OF WAKEFUL VULNERABILITY, WHEN STRENGTH IS SET ASIDE AND ATTENTION TURNS INWARD.
ARTIST STATEMENT
What is it that we sacrifice today and for what, exactly? we have been thinking about a familiar bodily memory. The moment after exertion, when you fall back into the ground after a long run, or a hard match. Completely spent. Completely open. Briefly defenseless. You have offered your strength. Your energy. The physical power that normally provides safety for a short moment, when the body gives something back. Clarity. Calm. A quiet euphoria.
Energy is still being offered every day. Through work. Through pressure. Through performance. Whether physical or mental, something is continuously given up. But the return has only been just pure tiredness. And the recovery for this is more often postponed. Rest is compressed into sleep. Wakeful rest is rarely left untouched. Filled instead with screens, input, distraction. The moment of full, conscious letting go has become rare.
Our latest creation ’The Oblation Bench’ form emerged from that absence. Its form allows the body to move from use into yielding. You can sit on it as a daybed. That is possible. BUT its intention becomes clearer when the body lies down on this almost balancing form.On the back, with arms and legs released, the chest is gently lifted above the limbs. The posture opens and it is exposed, unsupported yet held. In this position, the body no longer braces itself. There is nothing to grip.
The form takes over what the body usually insists on doing by itself. This bench seeks to hold that state. Not collapse. Not sleep. But wakeful surrender. For a moment, there is only you and the one above. Or your inner space. Awake, but not quite falling asleep. Spaces for total physical openness without stimulation have become scarce. This bench resists that pattern. It offers rest and stillness without performance. Vulnerability without exposure in a place that feels safe.
