POSITIONED AT THE INTERSECTION OF ART, ARCHITECTURE AND FURNITURE, IT FUNCTIONS AS A STOOL, PEDESTAL OR SOLITARY PRESENCE. PRODUCED IN A LIMITED EDITION OF 8 + 1 AP AND HANDCRAFTED IN PORTUGAL, EACH PIECE CARRIES THE DEPTH AND MOVEMENT OF THE MARBLE’S NATURAL VEINING, MAKING EVERY EDITION SUBTLY UNIQUE.
ARTIST STATEMENT
It is 2022 and Carlos comes home dragging a pair of small marble cubes.
Or rather, I am the one who has to carry them home from Bukowskis.
I try to find some reasonable explanation for their existence.
Small. Unusable. Possibly useful as a nightstand for a bed with Japanese proportions. But we do not have one.
They sit there like an argument I never agreed to.
Eventually, though, they grow on me. They are now my favourite pieces in the social area of our home. They can be used as extra seats when we are too many, but most of all they work as resting spots. For a coffee cup by the sofa. By the lounge chair. By the lounger. Or at the perfect height for a plate of dinner when the body, after ten hours in an office chair, simply wants to sit on the floor.
While making Oblation Stool, we find ourselves in disagreement again. This time about the size of the cube we have designed. I think we are inspired by different things. My ideal size is my familiar thirty by thirty, give or take. This cube is forty five by forty five. It has been inspired by the woven leather buttons on Carlos’s mother’s coat.
I am letting Carlos win. Who can compete with the love for someone’s mum?
The cube will grow on me this time too. I am certain of it.
