ARTIST STATEMENT
When we designed the Santos Chair, we were thinking about what remains when layers are removed. Not only in objects, but in people. The name Santos refers to saints rather than angels, figures defined by restraint, discipline, and a deliberate closeness to the human condition.
The form grew from the body rather than from an idea of comfort. It emerged as a single, continuous gesture, carved and hollowed rather than assembled. Ornament was deliberately left out. What remains is structure, weight, and proportion, allowing the material to speak honestly through grain, thickness, and void.
We wanted the chair to feel exposed without being fragile. Its reduction is not about purity as perfection, but about clarity. Sitting becomes a grounded act, where the body is held rather than softened, present rather than performed.
For us, the Santos Chair is about honesty and presence. Like the saints it alludes to, it does not seek admiration through excess, but meaning through restraint. A chair reduced to what is necessary, and nothing more.
