WEDDING AT CANA

WEDDING AT CANA BY CARLOS ROMELL | WEDDING AT CANA IS A FLATWARE COLLECTION IN SILVER, DESIGNED BY CARLOS ROMELL AND CRAFTED FROM MATERIALS SUCH AS STERLING SILVER, HORN, AND BRASS.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I was asked to create a unique flatware set in sterling silver. Rather than designing something purely classical or overtly contemporary, I wanted to create a collection that could exist between eras, combining references to traditional craftsmanship with a more postmodern sensibility.

As a child, I spent a great deal of time reading with my mother. One of the books we returned to most often was the Bible. Among its many stories, the wedding at Cana remained with me: the moment Christ transformed water into wine. That story became one of the emotional and symbolic foundations of this collection.

While sketching the pieces, I became interested in the idea of transformation, almost as an act of alchemy, where distinct materials and forms could coexist while retaining their individual character. It took months before I fully understood what the collection needed to become. Eventually, I realised the work had to be designed for someone I deeply love, someone I could imagine sharing that wedding with. In that sense, the collection became quietly shaped by my relationship with my partner.

One of the defining qualities of the collection is the relationship between the individual pieces. At first glance, they may appear mismatched or unconventional, yet together they form a coherent whole. I think relationships often work in the same way. Love evolves through time, repetition, conflict, tenderness, and change. You continue learning one another throughout life, and in many ways, continue falling in love again and again.

The central themes of Wedding at Cana are transformation, intimacy, devotion, and the possibility of miracles.
